Obi’s Departure Dealt Major Blow to ADC | Peter Ameh
Former presidential candidate and political activist, Peter Ameh, has stated that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, played a major role in elevating actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo to national political prominence.Ameh made the remarks while reacting to recent political debates surrounding Obi’s influence in opposition politics and the growing conversations around the strength of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to Ameh, Kenneth Okonkwo became widely recognised in Nigeria’s political space largely because of his association with Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election campaign.“Peter Obi gave visibility and political relevance to many individuals who aligned with his movement. Kenneth Okonkwo became a household political figure through that platform,” Ameh said.The political commentator further argued that Obi’s departure from ADC significantly weakened the party’s national appeal and momentum, especially among young Nigerians and grassroots supporters who were drawn to Obi’s reform-driven message.
He maintained that Obi remains one of the most influential opposition figures in Nigeria, noting that his political ideology and mass appeal continue to resonate with millions of Nigerians dissatisfied with the country’s economic and governance challenges.
Ameh also criticised attempts by some political actors to downplay Obi’s contributions to opposition politics, insisting that the former Anambra State governor transformed political participation among youths and first-time voters during the last general elections.He added that opposition parties hoping to build a formidable coalition ahead of future elections must recognise the political weight Obi commands across different regions of the country.
The comments have since sparked reactions across social media, with supporters and critics of both Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo debating the impact of their political alliance and the future direction of opposition politics in Nigeria.
